The value of Twitter wine tastings

Last week on July 26 and July 31, I participated virtually in two Twitter wine tastings:  the first, Burgers with a Side of Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais!, offered by Georges Duboeuf and Wine Twits, and the second, #Winechat with Rioja, offered by Vibrant Rioja and

I was invited by Wine Twits to participate in the Duboeuf tasting, as I am a member of their DrinkTwits Virtual Tasting Network.  I was provided with samples of three wines and paperwork that included event information, wine tasting notes and pricing, and burger recipes.  The tasting included a live, streaming video broadcast with Georges Duboeuf’s Export Director Yann Bourigault and Chef Bob Waggoner, host of PBS’s Ucook with Chef Bob.  The event was well-organized and I learned about Beaujolais/burger pairings, as well as discovered three nice wines under $20.00: 2009 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages, 2009 Georges Duboeuf Brouilly, and 2009 Georges Duboeuf Juliénas Château des Capitans.

The second tasting I discovered by following Rioja Wine on Facebook and Twitter.  I picked up a bottle of 2009 Montebuena (retail $9.99, 100% Tempranillo from Rioja) at my local wine store, and joined an hour-long question and answer session with a representative from the Regulatory Board of Denominación de Origen Rioja.

I have participated in a number of Twitter tastings in the last year or two and below are what I perceive to be the value of these tastings:

1.  The wines are exposed to thousands of people through tweets, photos, and face-to-face gatherings around the country and the world.

2.  Wineries and wine companies have the opportunity to connect and interact directly with participants, who include wine enthusiasts, bloggers, and professionals.

3. Participants have the opportunity to taste and evaluate wines, learn about the wines from professionals in the business and other participants, and most importantly, make valuable connections with each other, wineries, and wine companies.

Twitter tastings are a win-win for all involved – wineries, wine companies, and consumers – by providing a channel for connections, interaction, and long-lasting relationships.  If you, your brand, your blog, or your business are interested in participating in a Twitter tasting, there are two worldwide events scheduled:  2nd Annual #PinotSmackdown on August 18, and 2nd Annual #CabernetDay on September 1.  So grab some wine and your portable electronic device, and prepare to taste, connect, and interact!
